I bet Bush actually reads more books than either of them...

Sir Jerk? - Jay Nordlinger - The Corner on National Review Online:

So, Paul McCartney is in the East Room of the White House, with President and Mrs. Obama. He is being fêted because he has just won an award from the Library of Congress. He caps the evening with this remark – this is his farewell, his send-off: "After the last eight years, it's good to have a president that knows what a library is."

Can anyone tell me why people are such schmucks? Why they are so graceless and clueless and nasty? I mean, Paul McCartney's like the richest, most popular, most honored musician in the world. Does he not have it in him to behave like a gentleman — or at least a non-boor — while he's being celebrated at the White House? Does he have to be the Wanda Sykes of popular music? Is it not possible to love Obama, as McCartney does, without hating Bush — or at least insulting him on a high, non-political occasion?

I don't care that "Penny Lane" is a pretty tune, Paul McCartney is a horse's butt. Let me amend that: He acted like one, on Wednesday night.

Not to mention that Bush married a librarian. I wonder how many books Michelle ma Belle reads?

* Update: Good comment here: I'm not surprised that [Bush bashing] mantra is still hanging around. I mean, do you think they want to talk about the last 18 months?

Way to ruin my musical memories, Paul.

Muso's think that because they have achieved celebrity that they can speak forth-or is that verbal diarrhoea forth-on any subject. Being a Brit,he should have been respectful and stuck to the music, instead of Obamaworshipping

Do conservatives read older books on Pakistan, Afghanistan?
It seems that their entire reading is confined to Leftist writers and historians, thus the entirely ignorant writings of most conservatives on Af-Pak.

I don't think many do.

America is acquiring an empire precisely because we don't want an empire. That's why we can be trusted. People complain endlessly about American "imperialism," but their actions reveal that they know that we are not trying to conquer countries for our aggrandizement.

For instance, countries like Iran, India, Pakistan, China are not suddenly feeling friendly towards each other out of concern that America is in Afghanistan, and might start picking off nearby countries. This is VERY ODD in the context of history.

You trust us to go invading here and there on the globe for the same reason children trust grownups will not steal their toys. Because they are boring to us. Afghanistan is stupefyingly boring to most Americans.

We just want to stay home and be ourselves. Alas, we are the only grown-ups on the planet, so we have to take care of the children.

Is boring the right attitude to have?. Should a country like Afghanistan be boring?

Posted by: Bisaal at June 7, 2010 08:44 PM

Of course not. I'm exaggerating to make a point.

You are not trusted in Muslim countries esp, and also great many Indians do not trust American motives.

You too need not be so trustful of a Govt that has legalized Abortion, Pornography, Divorce.

American Conservatives are forever tooting the virtues of Kemalist Turkey

The Ottoman Empire at various points in its history had a Christian majority; its civil service at different points was more Venetian, Armenian and Jewish then Turkish; its self-understanding was global and religious, that is, as the caliphate of Islam, rather than as a national entity.

When World War I reduced Turkey to an Anatolian rump, Kemal Ataturk attempted to impose "Turkishness" as a secular, national ideology on the European model. To make the country "Turkish", several million Orthodox Christians were estimated to have been killed.
David Goldman

Doesnt this prove the ignorance and stupidity of Conservatives?

Posted by: Bisaal at June 8, 2010 09:36 PM

Yeah, stupid and ignorant. Especially in our naive idea that brown-skinned people in distant lands are equal in potential with us, and may, with a bit of patience and encouragement grow to wisdom and maturity.

I may delete this post. It is somehow attracting torrents of comment spa m.

"You are not trusted in Muslim countries esp, and also great many Indians do not trust American motives."

But you do trust us, in the sense I was writing about. If you didn't you would act much differently.

Tell me, is Erdogan living in secret bunkers? Does he dread American snipers? If America is not trustworthy, then he would surely be doing so, since we have some very good reasons to put a TLAM into his ivy-covered cottage.

You focus almost exclusively on political wisdom and maturity, in the sense of having a working constitutional govt.

But America has strayed out of Tao and its vaunted political wisdom is standing on very weak foundations. The next push, economic or otherwise, may deal very harshly with it.

Posted by: Bisaal at June 9, 2010 10:24 PM

You are quite possibly right. It's hard to say clearly how far a nation is from the Tao—who can measure such things?—so one tends to comment on day-to-day issues. But it is always on may mind.

I'll be much focused on the 2010 and 2012 elections, as indicators. Will we recoil strongly from the Obama madness? Will we be sadder but wiser?

But only the Church of Jesus the Christ is always renewed, always has another Spring. Human institutions grow old and creaky.
