I could be wrong...

Russia has invaded Georgia. So where are the giant puppets?

Where is the "anti-war" movement? Where the protests?

Perhaps they just haven't had time to get organized yet. I walked past the Russian consulate on Green Street today, and all was sleepy.

But perhaps the "pacifists" just need a few days to gin up the protest machinery. Right?

It would be wrong to judge them harshly so early in the game. Wrong to indulge my suspicion that they are horrid frauds who are only anti-America, and don't give a damn if distant foreigners live or die.

Perhaps they will surprise me.....

Last time I checked, the Russian government didn't operate in my name. It seems to me that petitioning a foreign government for redress of wrongs committed against a third party is something of a waste of energy.

Asking my own government to stop doing in my name things which I do not approve seems like a good use of energy. Or at least more productive.

People protest against foreign governments all the time. Remember the Chinese Olympic torch run? And the UN in NYC has protestors pretty much non-stop.

And it probably it would NOT be a waste of time, since the Russians are surely taking world opinion into account. In fact, they are probably gauging us fairly shrewdly, and calculating that you leftists have pretty much got us paralyzed (and Europe totally paralyzed), and so they can attack small nations and commit atrocities without much risk.

This war is happening partly because Putin looked at YOU, and said, "There's nothing there."

Actually, this is a rare instance where "peace protests" might actually tend towards producing peace, instead of war!

Putin is surely hazarding on lefty nihilism making any making any firm action by NATO (which is probably what would really produce peace) politically impossible. If you lefties were protesting against Russia he would have to revise his calculations.

But my bet is that he knows you as well as I do. So we get war.
