Same lies over and over...
Michelle Malkin has a great round-up of "the toxic American disease known as Winter Soldier Syndrome."
The tale of Army Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp, the discredited “Baghdad Diarist” for the discredited New Republic magazine, is an old tale:
Self-aggrandizing soldier recounts war atrocities. Media outlets disseminate soldier’s tales uncritically. Military folks smell a rat and poke holes in tales too good (or rather, bad) to be true. Soldier’s ideological sponsors blame the messengers for exposing anti-war fraud.
Beauchamp belongs in the same ward as John F. Kerry, the original infectious agent of the toxic American disease known as Winter Soldier Syndrome. The ward is filling up....
Michelle has various others, with YouTube videos. There have been a lot of them. It's revealing to see them all listed together...
...Think Jimmy Massey, the unhinged Marine who falsely accused his unit of engaging in mass genocide against Iraqis...Posted by John Weidner at August 9, 2007 07:40 AM
...Think Jesse MacBeth and Micah Wright, anti-war Army Rangers who weren’t Army Rangers....
...Think Josh Lansdale, the anti-war Army medic who attacked former GOP Sen. Jim Talent by spinning a bogus health care tale swallowed whole by Dem Sen. Claire McCaskill, Gen. Wesley Clark and the far Left VoteVets.org crew....
..Think Amorita Randall, the NYTimes-championed former naval construction worker who told the Times magazine that she served in Iraq, was in a Humvee that blew up, and was raped twice while serving in the Navy–but, in fact, had never served in Iraq....
Well yeah — it works. What remaining credibility those organizations have is because of their ideology, not accuracy. Why shouldn't they tell the same lies over and over?
Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at August 9, 2007 08:55 AMYes, but why does it work? Why is it so easy to dupe the public over and over again? The audience has to be something of a willing participant, don't they?
Posted by: Mike Plaiss at August 9, 2007 09:37 AMThe audience is "liberals," not everybody. And they are fooled because they want to be fooled. For reasons I've already bored you all with. The general public is only "duped" out of laziness--they are glad to hear that the story is false, but won't click a mouse to check on it
What interests me here is how leftish leaders and publications who might tend towards moderation and sense are forced into "Kossification." TNR has a reputation for good sense (of a leftish sort) but they've apparently seen the writing on the wall. Go kooky or get Liebermanned.
Posted by: John Weidner at August 9, 2007 10:43 AMIf the second part of your analysis is correct, conservatives everywhere should be smiling. If the Kos crowd can bully their party into actually spelling out what they want (socialized medicine, living wage laws, aggressive affirmative action programs, more power to labor unions, etc.), then it will only take a few elections before conservatives once again control all branches of government.
Posted by: Mike Plaiss at August 9, 2007 12:33 PMIt gets better :
"Congress’s failure to secure a timetable for withdrawing American troops from Iraq has split anti-war activists on the tactical question of whether to attack Democrats, who now control Capitol Hill.
The split has also underlined accusations among some activists that MoveOn has abandoned its credentials as an issue-based advocacy group and now instead provides cover for Democratic Party leaders..."
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch...
Posted by: John Weidner at August 9, 2007 01:00 PMI found your Blog by looking for soapstone. Then the rest of your "jottings." I appreciate the ones I have read in the last 15 minutes. I didn't think there were any Conservatives in Barbara and Dianne land. Keep it up..do you get any space on SFgate.com? Maybe some of your city neighbors will get a clue if they read your blog.
Posted by: ASM_ybe at August 9, 2007 10:47 PMThanks! We still like our countertops.
I'm pretty sure my neighbors don't want a clue. I think that's the most interesting thing I've learned from five years of blogging...
