Charming place...

Charlene was in New York City last weekend, and visited a beautiful Dominican parish, the Church of St Vincent Ferrer. (Interesting saint too.)Unfortunately most of her pictures didn't come out. It's hard to take pictures of church interiors. But here are a couple of them...

Always a difficult lighting situation - especially if stained glass windows are involved...but that looks very cool!

Solution: get a little itty-bitty tripod with flexible legs that she can screw into the bottom of her camera. Then set the flash to either "no flash" or (if she has it) "fill flash." The tripod holds the camera steady enough so that ambient light photos turn out well.

In the fill flash mode, if the area is really dark, any people walking about look like ghosts. It's a pretty cool effect.

We actually have one of those, although I haven't tried to use it in a church. But you also need a flat surface to set it on. I'm waiting for one that grabs a pew-back with little pseudo-pods...

I've dragged a portable lectern around a church before, to get this set of primarily stained glass window shots at a little Episcopal church I sub at occasionally...I'm not very pleased with the results, but that was more a function of the crappy Canon Powershot A620 (that camera was a disappointment)...I can't wait until I get to sub there again, so I can take the new camera and tripod!
