D it is...

Here's something you should read, on the importance of keeping up your Vitamin D level to prevent cancer. A daily dose of 1,000 International Units is being recommended. (Of course your body uses sunlight to make Vitamin D, so if you are getting lots of sun you should be OK. Except for getting skin cancer...) Interestingly, I see that the multivitamin I take contains 400 IU, and Charlene's contains 67 IU! Odd.

(Thanks to Orrin)

Just a quick word of caution - a long, slow overdose of vitamin D can actually hurt you. Unlike most vitamins, which are water-soluble and flushed easily from the body, vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble and are accumulated in the tissues over time.

I don't think the dosages recommended here are likely to hurt anybody, but some people like to go overboard with this stuff.

Thanks Mike, that's a good reminder.

I recently read of a study that indicates that Vitamin E (which is considered to be about as harmless as you get) may have long-term ill-effects in dosages over 400 IU.

I wonder if there's a vitamin blog that consolidates all this kind of info?
