Thanksgiving pies...

Charlene, the only "morning person" in the family, was up betimes, working her usual magic in the kitchen. Here are our pies...
Pies, Thanksgiving 2005
Widdershins, from the front: pear tart, shaker lemon, pecan, pumpkin, cranberry-apple, and in the middle, pumpkin with maple.

Thanks! The turkey's almost done...

I had to look up "widdershins" - cool word!

It goes with "deosil."

I don't find deosil in my dictionaries, but Google turns it up as "clockwise," in the context of witchcraft.

Is it really an old word, comparable to widdershins? Or something concocted?

Would the cook release her secret for the caramelization of those pear halves? The best-looking tart I've seen!

Here's a link to a GIF of a hasty scan of a very blurry photocopy of the recipe, which was from Gourmet.

It caramelizes like crazy...and flipping it with hot molten sugar and butter flying around always makes you feel very alive...
