Just thought this was interesting...

Peter Robinson writes in The Corner:

A couple of decades ago in the Reagan White House, John Roberts and I had adjoining offices, and we've kept in touch, in a desultory way, ever since. What can I tell you about him? That he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Devout but light-hearted, a devoted husband, and the doting father of two adopted children. And so thoroughly modest that I had no idea of his reputation for brilliance within the legal community--I'd supposed he was a pretty good lawyer, but knew no more--until the President nominated John to the D.C. Court of Appeals.

We'll all have to wait for the slicing and dicing of John's legal work to form views of his judicial philosophy, but I can tell you from personal knowledge that what we have here is a thoroughly marvelous human being...

A Bush kind of guy, I suspect.

Most on the left are not that upset or bothered by Roberts. He is, as you say, a brilliant legal mind, extremely nice personally, easy going. Personally, I have no problem with him (or, with the exception of your last sentence, your column). I do still keep the door open to something that might show up in future to change that view, of course!

For example - the LA Times ran an article about a month ago documenting all the groups putting their "best choice" lists forward to the White House for SC nominee, and they said then the one that was likely to get their wish wasn't the right-wingers, nor the Christianist-right, but the Chamber of Commerce people (who, no surprise, were seeking a solid pro-business, anti-labor, nominee).

On Friday or Saturday, they ran a followup which indicates the CofC got their way...Purportedly, Roberts was #1 on their list to Bush (and with Gonzalez out due to Treasongate problems, Roberts won!)...
