small things...
Sigh. It's a slow time for blogging. I wish we'd get busy and invade somebody. I've been laughing over Harry Reid's petulant response to a RNC "hit piece" on him. It's nothing but his own record! And notice he's not claiming it misrepresents him. No. This reminds me of the old Cold War joke, that we should say to the Soviets, "You stop telling lies about us, and we'll stop telling the truth about you."
Of course when he's quoted saying things like, "Most Of Us Have No Problem With Taking A Small Amount Of The Social Security Proceeds And Putting It Into The Private Sector..." you can see why he's yelping. What pathetic losers these guys are.
Oooh, and how about this: “We’re Visiting Chile Because It Is Doing Interesting Things In Social Security And Other Parts Of Its Free Market System…” Tell 'em, Harry. Of course such free market innovations are too radical for the USA. Perhaps we'd better wait another 50 years, and let Chile test the waters. They are tougher than us...
Slippery Statement warning: Hoy notes that apparently several commentators have mentioned that Bush's budget will DOUBLE the co-pay for vets. Shocking! Heartless! Of course they don't mention any dollar amounts. Wonder why? [Hint. the current co-pay is $7]
Matthew Hoy also has a nice summary of the exchange where Chris Russert ambushed Rumsfeld with a doctored quote, two sentences pulled out of a long exchange and meshed to make Rumsfeld look bad. And Rummie pulled the actual transcript out of his pocket and insisted on reading it! I LOVE IT!
I think Adlai Stevenson used that joke a lot: If the Republicans quit telling lies about the Democrats, we'll quit telling the truth about them.
Posted by: steve chamberlain at February 11, 2005 11:14 AMI bet they were shocking lies. Those mendacious Republicans probably suggested that Democrats were planning ever bigger and more intrusive government, and were likely to entangle us in yet another unwinnable Asian war...
Posted by: John Weidner at February 11, 2005 02:42 PMI've often envied you conservatives and your ability to just make up facts to suit yourselves. It would be so nice to be able to do that...
Fact: Harry Reid (and Bill Clinton, for that matter) NEVER said they supported privatized (or personalized) accounts. What they said is that they could support diverting a portion of the SS Trust Fund to invest in the stock market vs US Treasury Bonds. It would be done by the SS Administration, not under individual names. To pretend this constitutes supporting privatized accounts is a stretch so far it could be called a lie!
Vet co-pays: I notice you failed to mention this is PRESCRIPTION DRUG co-pays. So if you have five Rxs monthly, your copay is going from $35 per month to $75 per month!
Doctored quotes: Since you're obviously upset anyone would do such a thing, join me in calling for the resignation of Brit Hume from Fox after he took a quote from FDR 71 yrs ago, pulled portions of three different sentences out of it, and remixed them, using the doctored quote as his evidence that even FDR really supported privatized accounts! Of course, FDR did no such thing (as confirmed on MSNBC last night by his grandson). The only comment FDR made about privatized accounts was that AFTER SS was established and working as we now know it, it might be worth looking to allowing people to contribute ADDITIONAL and VOLUNTARY money to personal investment accounts, to supplement SS in their retirement. Gee...thats the SS add-on that Democrats have been suggesting for over a decade!
