Urban legends...

I was pleased to see Glenn Reynolds prominently debunking the Bush 41 supermarket scanner story. It's one of those lies that has turned into an urban legend, and keeps popping up again and again.

Another one that lives on, is the notion that former President Gerald Ford is clumsy. That one was started by LBJ, and the press delightedly picked it up and ran. Actually Ford was quite an athlete, and seriously considered a career in pro football. I've heard various versions of "strong man is really clumsy." It's sometimes said about body-builders, or it's said that they really aren't very strong. Silly, and probably stems from a certain jealousy.

I take it you're not familiar with bodybuilding and weightlifting. The reason bodybuilders are said to be relatively weak is that they tend to suffer from a relative lack of limit strength (how much weight they can successfully lift) and speed strength (used in rapid, explosive movements of the sort done when running and jumping) when compared to various types of weightlifters.

This is due to the fact that weightlifters train for strength in specific lifts, while bodybuilders train for size and shape (and thus for strength endurance rather than the other types of strength). The overly general rule of thumb here is that you get strong by lifting very heavy weights and you get big by doing a lot of repeated lifting. I'm sure the westsiders are snarling in frustration at this gross oversimplification, but it's a good enough explanation for those who aren't hardcore lifters.

That's interesting.

Of course the word is "relative." Compared to me they are very very strong...

Ford sometimes contributed to his myth. I recall a notorious incident of him hitting his head on the door of Air Force One as he exited. After that we saw a lot of cartoons of Ford in a football helmet.

So Ford was tall, and hit his head exiting the teeny doors they have on planes. The only reason these media creatures feel safe making fun of tall people is because most actors, writers, and other artistic and media types seem to be shrimpy types; I'll bet you could fit most of them two each into the overhead luggage compartments of the average passenger plane. Heightist bigots! 8|
